Flyover to IT hub: GHMC plan awaits government approval

Hyderabad: To address the traffic woes and provide relief to motorists coming from core areas of the twin cities to the IT Hub (Hitec City and financial district), the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has proposed to construct a six-lane, two-way flyover crossing the Seven Tombs junction, Filmnagar Road junction, OU Colony and Whisper Valley junction.

The flyover is estimated to cost `333.55 crore, of which `275.55 crore is meant for construction and `58 crore for acquiring properties.

The standing committee has approved the proposal which will be sent to the state government for approval and administrative sanction pending approval of GHMC's general body.

After getting government's approval, the civic body will float tenders in the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode. It will also engage the services of a project management consultant (PMC) for supervision, quality control, quality assurance and quality audit.

GHMC officials told Express that minister for municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) KT Rama Rao, at meetings held with GHMC authorities, instructed them to build grade separators at the OU Colony junction on top priority and to prioritise



conflict-free corridors under the Strategic Road Development Programme.

GHMC is also taking up construction of an expressway from Tolichwki to Gachibowli along with service roads on either side under Road Development Programme (RDP). The road from Rethibowli to Gachibowli is an intermediate ring road with heavy traffic. During peak hours, heavy traffic jams have become the order of the day, causing loss of time and wastage of fuel.

The stretch from Seven Tombs junction to Whisper Valley junction has several structures, including religious, on either side of the road. As the right of way (RoW) is not available, work on widening the road and forming service road has been held up. 

The proposed OU colony junction is part of the NFCL junction-Allwyn crossroads (Miyapur) corridor proposed to be developed as a conflict-free corridor under SRDP.

STUP, the consultant, has prepared a feasibility report on grade separators at Seven Tombs, Film Nagar road junction, OU Colony junction and Whisper valley. According to the consultant's study on peak-hour traffic, 6,732 passenger cars pass through OU Colony junction per hour and 8,000 through Whisper Valley. Hence the need for grade separators at these junctions.
