Former MLA from Kamareddy B Balaiah died of a heart attack on Thursday night at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad. He was elected as Kamareddy MLA in 1978.
Balaiah was earlier Municipal councillor and Municipal Vice-Chairman. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi rewarded him with the Kamareddy MLA ticket because of his sincerity. It is said that Balaiah did not have Rs 300 required as deposit amount to contest the election. His mother reportedly sold her ornaments to help him with the deposit
amount. Former Minister Arugula Rajaram provided Rs 15,000 and another friend gave Rs 5,000 towards election expenditure.
Balaiah used to commute by bus using a pass from Kamareddy to Hyderabad, and would walk down to the Assembly. When the government allotted him 600 square yards of land at Jubilee Hills, Balaiah declined it because he didn’t have Rs 20,000 to pay for the land. He is survived by four sons and four daughters.
