The Hyderabad police on Saturday registered a case against former Telugu Desam Party MP and industrialist Nama Nageshwar Rao for allegedly blackmailing a woman by threatening to make public her private pictures.
The woman lodged her complaint with Jubilee Hills police in July, but it was not registered. She then obtained a court direction to the police to register her complaint and investigate the case.
Rao also filed a counter complaint with the Jubilee Hills police stating that he did not know the woman and that she was blackmailing him.
According to inspector K Purna Chander, a case was registered against Rao under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) of the IPC on the basis of the woman's complaint.
"The contents of the complaint will be examined before acting further against the former MP," Chander said, adding that investigation is on.
In her
complaint, the woman alleged that Rao was threatening her for questioning his links with a former Karnataka woman legislator. She said she had been in acquaintance with Rao since 2013 and he used to visit her house frequently. A few months ago, she came to know that he was facing allegations of cheating a Karnataka former MLC after promising to marry her.
"When I started questioning him, he and his brother N Seethaiah started threatened me, saying they would release my private pictures. They even assaulted me physically," she complained and produced a video clipping as an evidence of assault on her.
The woman said she had spoken to the former Karnataka MLC, who revealed to her that she had approached a court in Delhi seeking justice.
Rao, who has been into construction business, was among the richest MPs in the country in Parliament between 2009 and 2014. He was also heading the TD parliamentary party.
