The intensive drive to restore city’s footpaths for pedestrians gained pace on Sunday setting a new record with 1,317 encroachments removed across busy stretches of the city, surpassing Saturday’s tally of 1,124 encroachments.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) which is leading the initiative in association with different departments including the police had its six specially assembled teams covering stretches at Malakpet, Liberty Junction, Narayanguda, Gachibowli, Rethibowli, Karwan and Miyapur.
Equipped with JCBs, tippers and accompanied by traffic, law and order police, the teams started the encroachment exercise early in the morning and by 4 pm, the
enforcement removed 964 footpaths encroachments including 761 permanent/semi-permanent and 118 movable ones. By the time, the teams returned, total number of encroachments cleared stood at 1,317.
Director of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management of the GHMC, Viswajit Kampati appreciated the personnel for their day long work and said, “Excellent work officers. We have broken our own record today by clearing 1,317 encroachments”.
Meanwhile, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy on Sunday directed officials to draw estimates for the reconstruction of footpaths within two days and take up the restoration works immediately.
