The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) intensified raids on unauthorized slaughtering and establishments procuring such meat.
It is mandatory for hotels, restaurants, function halls and other establishments to procure only stamped meat from GHMC slaughter houses. The municipal corporation also appealed citizens to insist and purchase only stamped meat at outlets in the colonies and other places.
However, during raids conducted by the municipal corporation, it was unearthed that many establishments were procuring unstamped meat.
Consumption of unstamped meat could result in ill health as unauthorized slaughtering is done mostly of deceased and unhealthy goats or sheep, GHMC officials
informed.
Keeping in view of health of citizens, the civic body levied penalties and seized a few establishments in the past and is continuing the raids. During the 2018-19 financial year, cases were registered against 1728 persons and nearly Rs. 2.63 lakh penalty was levied on them, besides seizing 1798 kg of unstamped meat and 6892 kg of beef.
The GHMC, in association with the police, was conducting raids in different areas and seizing slaughterhouses that were offering unstamped meat. At present, slaughterhouses are being operated at Ramnaspura, Amberpet, Jiyaguda and New Bhoiguda. This apart, a rendering plant is operated at Chengicherla to treat the waste created due to slaughter of goat, sheep and others.
