The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday launched five more Rs 5 meal centres at different locations, taking the total number to 116 in the city.The new centres were launched at Vinayakanagar Santhoshimaa Colony Bus stop, East Anandbagh, Tolichowki Crossroads, Moosarambagh crossroads, Malakpet Market Yard and Golconda Fort.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao directed the GHMC to establish 150 centres across the city for the benefit of poor. Emphasis was being laid on operating these centres in
areas populated with low income groups.
The first Rs 5 meal centre was launched in 2014. Earlier, only daily wage earners used to throng these centres but of late students, sales executives, police personnel and marketing professionals and others are relishing the food offered at the centres. The municipal corporation spends additional Rs 30 crore every year towards this scheme. The municipal corporation had earmarked a budget of Rs 11 crore for the year 2014-15 for launching the scheme.
