The GHMC has started holding awareness campaigns in schools where students are informed what to do while encountering street dogs and measures to take in case of a dog bite. Similar campaign was held in Zilla Parishad High School, Shamshiguda, Kukatpally on Saturday where 850 students were made aware of these ‘do’s and don’ts’. “We are trying to cover at least two schools everyday in each zone,” said Dr K. Nagarjuna, veterinary officer.

“Students are informed not to throw stones or pull ears of dogs on streets, not to disturb a mother with her

puppies and not to play around street dogs. Many people do not even know that one needs to take Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) injections. We informed the students that they can get these injections at Fever Hospital,” he added.

When enquired whether GHMC has taken help of any dog behaviorists while sensitising children, the official said it was not done. “We will be soon holding meetings with resident welfare associations and and slum federations,” he replied when asked about community level interventions.
