The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to have UCIP for 16 corridors (64.4 km) in package-1 and 17 corridors (68.1 km) in package-2 totaling 132.5 km.
Apart from traffic congestion, the reason cited to go for urban corridor improvement project is that many of the corridors have less life span for pavements, poor maintenance of road pavements, lack of adequate pedestrian facilities with footpath encroachments by shops and hawkers, improper traffic signal phasing, improper bus stop designs and lack of storm water drainage and on-street parking.
To address these problems, GHMC proposes to take up Urban Corridor Improvement Plan (UCIP) project in selected urban corridors. The aim is to have transport corridors which meet international standards and include provisions for both motorised and non-motorised transport. GHMC officials said UCIP provides uniform standard carriageway
width from one junction to another to allow smooth traffic flow without bottlenecks, improvement of junction operations by providing dedicated traffic lanes at the junction, flexible or rigid pavement carriageway built with proper camber and profile to have better riding quality.
Top priority would be for non-motorised transport (pedestrians and bicyclists), walkways for pedestrians by locating trees and street lights away from the footways to provide maximum use of pedestrian ways, provision of pedestrian crossings to ensure pedestrians safety.
Provision of dedicated space, ducts below footpaths for essential utilities which require regular maintenance to avoid damage to roads, proper storm water drainage system to prevent water logging on roads, provision of adequate parking bays on roads to prevent circuitous roads by motorists to find parking space.
