The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) property tax collections late on Sunday evening crossed a cumulative figure of Rs 1,300 crore.

To facilitate property owners pay the tax, the civic body was operating Citizen Service Centres (CSC) across the city till midnight and hopes to add more revenues to its kitty.

Property owners, who failed to pay the taxes before the deadline of March 31 would be levied penalty starting April 1. The GHMC has sent SMS to over 4.1 lakh property owners appealing them to pay property tax before the deadline and escape the penalty, officials said.

In addition to CSC, GHMC facilitated payment of property tax online or at Mee-Seva and e-Seva

centres.

Property tax is the major revenue source for the municipal corporation and the collection of Rs 1,300 crores was against the civic body’s target of touching Rs.1500 crore mark for the 2018-19 financial year.

This is even after GHMC Commissioner M Dana Kishore directing the officials to achieve the property tax collections target by March 15 itself. Directions were also issued to the officials to lay focus on unassessed and under assessed properties, besides those operating commercial establishments in the guise of residential structures.

With Lok Sabha elections code, officials were directed to focus on property tax collection, yet all the six zones appeared to be behind respective targets.
