The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is quietly going about reducing the emissions in the city and what more, saving up quite a bit on the cash side as well.
The GHMC’s efforts to reduce carbon emission are something that comes to light every day as dusk falls in the city, in the form of 4.92 lakh LED streetlights. Conventional streetlights were replaced with LED ones as part of an energy conservation project that started in 2017. The GHMC had inked a pact with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for this purpose.
The mega project saw a savings of 487.20 million units (MU) of energy and at the same time, the icing on top of the cake came in the form of a
drop in the electricity bill. The corporation has saved over Rs 250 crore since the project began.
According to officials, the project has helped in reducing carbon emission by a whopping 1,29,719 tonnes annually. As per the GHMC records, after conventional streetlights were replaced with LEDs, 4.06 tonnes of carbon emission was reduced.
Before installation of the LEDs, the monthly electricity consumption of streetlights in GHMC limits was 20.07 MU, which led to an expenditure of Rs 14.94 crore towards payment of monthly electricity bills. Now, the consumption has dipped to 9.96 MU and the bill is Rs 8.5 crore every month.
