The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified installation of LED streetlights in the city with over one lakh LED lights being installed in a span of one-and-a-half months.Every day, nearly 8,000 streetlights are being installed in different areas, officials said.
The GHMC had launched the project of replacing conventional bulbs in streetlights with LED ones. There are over 4.55 lakh streetlights in the city and GHMC is the first municipal corporation in the country to take up the mammoth task of replacing conventional bulbs with LED bulbs in streetlights.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao had directed officials to complete the
installation in the city by Diwali this year. Accordingly, GHMC is now intensifying its efforts to meet the deadline. The project is being taken up in coordination with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (ESSL), which will be maintaining the streetlights for seven years as per the agreement.
GHMC officials said that with the installation of one lakh new LED streetlights, nearly 2.32 million units power is being saved every day. Each unit costs about Rs 7, taking the savings to Rs 1.65 crore.
After installation of 4.55 lakh LED streetlights, the GHMC is expected to save around 20.73 million units and Rs 14.72 crore through reduction in power bills.
