Measures to adopt green energy and eco-friendly power utilities by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) appears to be yielding positive results. After replacing conventional streetlights with LEDs, the Corporation has saved Rs. 418 crore, a release here on Monday said.
The savings includes the money spent on electricity bills, material procurement and maintenance/labour charges. The civic body collaborated with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to execute the energy conservation project and installed 4.93 lakh LED bulbs in GHMC
limits by replacing conventional street lights.
As per GHMC records, in the financial year 2017-18 Rs. 42.42 crore, in 2018-19 Rs. 85.23 crore, in 2019-20 Rs. 84.48 crore in 2020-21 Rs 86.72 crore and from April 2021 to October 2021 Rs 49.93 crore, was money saved on electricity bills.
The other savings include material procurement worth Rs. 52 crore and labour/ maintenance charges summing up to Rs 1,848crore. The initiative, besides savings 487.20 million units (MU) of energy also reduced carbon emission by 1, 29, 719 tonnes.
