Authorities at Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has set a deadline of August 15 for all establishments who produce an average of 50kg garbage per day, to install composting machines in their premises to process the wet waste. Bulk garbage Generators (BGG) in commercial category include hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, IT companies, food courts, malls and institutions.

As per the Solid Waste management Rules, 2016 and protocol for star rating of garbage free cities, all the establishments producing an average of 50kg of waste per day have to process the wet waste.

The civic body served notices and paper notifications were given for all bulk garbage generators



insisting to install on- site Compost machines in their premises.

As part of the initiative, on Wednesday, GHMC officials staged a silent protest in front of major hotels/restaurants in the city. Civic officials sat in front of the BGGs and protested against them not practicing onsite composting or have not given their consent to practice onsite composting even after serving several notices to them.

“The initiative has drawn a huge positive response from Hotels & Restaurants and many of them, like Swagath Grand , came forward to install compost machines in all their hotels,” said J Shankaraiah Zonal Commissioner Kukatpally.
