The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday shifted 60 such persons to shelter homes.
The GHMC is providing shelter and food to 4,600 orphans and poor, who are engaged in begging at different shelter homes, said Mayor Bonthu Rammohan.
Stating that as per instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the GHMC was providing shelter and free food through Annapurna centres at 25 shelters homes, the Mayor said shelter and free meals was being ensured in 85 centres through NGOs as well.
This apart, health checkups were also being conducted. It is estimated that about 400 persons, who are engaged in begging are residing in and around the Secretariat area. All of them were being shifted to shelter homes.
Since the last couple of
days, 200 persons were shifted to shelter homes temporarily being operated in schools and stadiums to maintain social distance, he said.
The Mayor also appealed to individuals and organisations to hand over food and essential commodities to the GHMC or the police and not to distribute the same on their own as no social distance was being maintained during such programmes.
On Tuesday, the Mayor noticed an individual, who along with his friends, was distributing food to poor and requested them to not to distribute on roadside as the people were not maintaining social distance.
“There is the threat of the virus spreading due to such gatherings. People and organisations should coordinate with the GHMC for distributing food,” he said.
