The GHMC is planning to find a solution by conducting a key meeting with NGOs and other officials on June 23 at 10 am.
The beggars often cause much inconvenience to the road users, passersby and the devout at temples and places of worship. Annoyed at the complaints pouring in against the beggars, the Mayor of GHMC B Rammohan is all set to transform the pearl city of Hyderabad into a place sans beggar menace.
The aim is to ensure that genuine beggars get shelter and help while those are not should be dealt with seriously. Rammohan made some startling revelations that the beggars in city
get a whopping Rs 2 crore income every month and Rs 24 crore a year. As per a study there are 14,000 beggars on the roads, of whom only two per cent are genuine and the rest of 98 per cent beggars are not really beggars. And only to make fast buck they chosen this profession, he said.
Though the meeting aims to find a solution to this daunting problem of begging, it should also check the menace of Hijras which is the most horrifying at cross roads and main roads, people feel. The plan is to come out with an action plan to find a permanent solution against the begging.
