The GHMC has decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day by making sure that nobody goes hungry on February 14. The initiative, ‘Feed the Need’ is being taken up with assistance of city residents, hotels and other stakeholders.
The project will be run as a pilot on Thursday, and would be implemented on a large scale on important occasions like Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Republic Day among others, GHMC officials said.
During a meeting with representatives of hotel and function hall owners and NGOs on Monday, GHMC commissioner M. Dana Kishore said the corporation would bring all donors on one platform to bridge the gap between food being wasted on the one side and
people needing food on the other.
GHMC zonal commissioner Harichandana Dasari said, “many NGOs and hoteliers expressed readiness to join hands with the GHMC in this noble cause. Apple Homes are providing public refrigerators and they would be placed at government hospitals and slums.”
She said Sree Shakthi Group of Hotels, Pista House and others had agreed to supply food packets for distribution among the poor.
The GHMC has installed public refrigerators where donors can store food for needy persons to collect. It has also set up sites on footpaths where donors can leave goods that can be used by poor persons.
