Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to plant 50 lakh saplings under Telangana Ku Haritha Haram programme this year.

A zone wise action plan is also prepared by the Urban Biodiversity wing of the corporation and this year, the focus will be on avenue plantation along the major roads and minor roads, colony roads, open space plantations, institutional plantations, lake plantations and even all along the River Musi bed. The action plan also includes planting of trees, hedges and shrubs under flyovers, medians and parks etc.

Already, instructions have been issued to the Deputy Municipal Commissioners to identify places, including lake areas and open areas where extensive plantations can be taken up. Based on the locations, the Urban Biodiversity wing will be finalising the species of saplings, including avenue or native species to increase the green cover.

This apart, avenue plantations and green curtains will also be taken up in an organised manner along all roads in all the zones. The lakes in GHMC area will be taken up with very dense plantations on bunds and buffer areas and planting will also



include all the nalahs and along the River Musi, said an official from GHMC.

In last couple of years, the GHMC has been taking up tree plantation under various categories like avenue plantations, colony plantations, institutional plantations, open space plantations, graveyard plantations etc under the Telangana Ku Haritha Haram programme.

Efforts are on to convert all the open spaces into Tree Parks by planting trees and providing walking tracks. The open spaces will be converted as public spaces with green environment and other basic amenities to facilitate people make good use of the parks, he said.

In colonies, plantations will be taken up on the internal roads and other available areas by involving respective Resident Welfare Associations. GHMC is also taking up of Miyawaki plantations this year to promote dense green lung spaces in the city.

Meanwhile, GHMC is developing three urban forest parks at Suraram, Madannaguda and Nadergul where very dense plantations with native forest trees will be taken up with other amenities.
