GHMC to set up Basthi hospitals in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a bid to take medicare closer to the poor sections, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will set up ‘Basthi Dawakhanas’ in 50 slums of the city.

To be established in association with the Health and Family Welfare department, these medical centres will have a doctor, nurse, compounder and diagnostic facility as well.

After a meeting with senior officials including Rajeshwar Tiwari and Vakati Karuna apart from GHMC officials and Mayor B.Rammohan, Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy said in the first phase, these centres would be set up in areas which have more slums. These will be located in slums that were located away from government hospitals and urban health



centres, he said.

Rammohan said that after inspection of suitable community halls of the civic body for setting up the dawakhas during this financial year, 40 community halls had been identified so far. Slums that are reporting more cases of malaria, dengue and communicable diseases were being given more importance for the concept, he said.

For the ‘Basthi Dawakhanas’, the civic body, which has nearly 1,300 community halls in the city, has been inspecting appropriate ones for creating required facilities. Orders have been issued to provide power and water supply along with other amenities for buildings that were being selected for the dawakhanas, according to a press release from GHMC.
