A baby girl has been born with an extra leg due to a rare condition at Jangaon government area hospital on Tuesday. Yellaboina Srilatha, a resident of Kanachanpally village was admitted to the hospital on Monday due to labour pain, and she delivered the baby girl after a team led by Dr Swapna performed a caesarean section on her. The girl born has three legs due to ‘Polymelia’.
The extra limb can be removed through surgery, Dr Swan said and added, “We have referred the baby to Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad. As per our knowledge the doctors
at the Niloufer Hospital had performed a similar surgery and removed the extra limb of a baby from Delhi, couple of years ago” she added. Following this, the relatives have shifted the girl to Niloufer for the surgery.
According to the doctors, Polymelia was a type of rare birth disorder which results in developing of extra body parts usually deformed and shrunken limbs. This happens when the embryo starts as conjoined twins. But one twin stops growing, leaving behind limbs of the undeveloped twin attached to the body of the developing baby.
