Nizamabad: The state government will release Godavari water to the Nizamsagar project in July end to help farmers protect the ensuing Vana Kalam (kharif) crops in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Following the request from farmers of Nizamsagar ayacut, the Congress government has issued orders in this regard. Nizamsagar project was constructed by Nizam on river Manjeera, a tributary of the Godavari, at Banjapally in Kamareddy district. Water will reach the Godavari at Kandakurthi in Renjal mandal of Nizamabad district.
In view of the construction of Kaleshwaram project, river Godavari reached Konda Pochammasagar in undivided Medak district and water will be released to Nizamsagar project through Haldivagu project. Then BRS government on an experimental basis had released water from
Konda Pochammasagar to Nizamsagar project six years ago. In the backdrop of a dry spell in north Telangana districts, the state government has decided to release 2 tmc of water from Konda Pochammasagar to Nizamsagar in a phased manner.
Of 17.802 tmc of gross storage capacity of Nizamsagar project, presently 3.928 tmc water is available. Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy directed officials to release 2 tmc of water from Nizamsagar project to protect the crops on 1.15 lakhs acres in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. As a precautionary measure, the government has decided to release 2 tmc of water from Konda Pochammasagar to Nizamsagar project in July. Irrigation department officials are making arrangements for the release of water.
