Incessant rains continue to pound Telangana, especially northern districts of the state. Heavy rains hit Nirmal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, and Asifabad for the sixth consecutive day yesterday. Gundi of Karimnagar district witnessed maximum rainfall of 18.9 cms till 11 PM last night.

At least 10 people died due to rain-related incidents during the past week and hundreds of villages in the worst-hit districts are inundated. Nearly 10 thousand people from low-lying areas of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Nirmal, and Mulugu districts are taking shelter in relief Centres.

River Godavari and River Krishna are in spate and their tributaries, various rivulets, and streams are overflowing. Dozens of villages have been cut off from the rest of the world as road connectivity has been hit due to overflowing streams. 36 gates of the SRSP Project in Nizamabad have been opened to release 4.5 lakh cusecs of flood water downstream. 

Officials are expecting more flood water as heavy rains are reported in upper catchment areas in Maharastra. Meanwhile, River Godavari has crossed the third danger level at Bhadrachalam and is flowing at 55.1 feet in height. River Krishna is also getting heavy inflows and heavy inflows are being released



downstream.

Met department has issued a red alert stating that heavy to very heavy rains are likely at some places in about 10 districts including Mancherial, Rajanna Sirsilla, Karimnagar, and Peddapally districts till tomorrow.  

Authorities in Nirmal districts have evacuated 12 villages on the banks of Kadem project as it is receiving heavy inflows and officials are releasing over 3 lakh cusecs of flood water.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has instructed the Ministers and officials to take all steps to prevent loss of life. He appealed to the people to avoid venturing out of their homes except in emergencies in view of the heavy rains.

The CM also spoke to ministers, district collectors, and all department officials over phone about the situation and issued instructions to them. He also asked the ministers and MLAs not to leave their local assembly constituencies until normalcy is restored.

Due to incessant rains, the State government has extended holidays to all educational institutions and postponed the EAMCET exams for Medical and agriculture streams. A few universities postponed the scheduled examinations.
