The water level in Hussain Sagar reached the Full Tank Level capacity of 513.41 metres. In fact, the water level on Sunday was recorded at 513.64 metres.
However, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials said there was nothing to panic as the lake was designed in a way that 1.50 metres can flow above the maximum water level of 514.91 metres. With steady inflows, excess water was draining out downstream through the sluice gates at Hotel Marriott end.
The GHMC lakes wing is constantly monitoring the situation. Twenty one sluice gates are installed for the water body several decades ago and officials have been ensuring that
all the trash and waste at the vents is cleared regularly. Every time, there is a heavy inflow into Hussain Sagar from upstream, surplus water overflows through the vents at Hotel Marriott end.
Before the water is released downstream, an alert is issued to ensure the safety of the citizens in low-lying areas, said a senior GHMC official.
At present, the situation is under control and there was nothing to panic. Residents living in the downstream areas of Domalguda, Himayatnagar, Liberty and Ashok Nagar will have to be cautious as more rains are expected during the next couple of days, said the official.
