Hyderabad has emerged as the best city in India for the third time in Mercer’s Quality of Living rankings 2017. However, this is just a silver lining. Of the 231 cities from across the world that Mercer has ranked for quality of living, Hyderabad ranked 144 which shows the poor state of affairs of Indian cities when compared to other cities in the world. The city’s ranking slipped by five places as it bagged 139 position last year. Fol lowing Hyderabad are Pune(145), Bengaluru(146), Chennai( 151), Mumbai(154), Kolkata( 160) and New Delhi(161).
The slipping of Hyderabad’s ranking as compared to last year has been attributed to irregular power supply, frequent voltage changes, restricted water supply in some areas. Mercer’s media release also cited the severe water crisis due to drought as one of the reasons
affecting rankings. Hyderabad police makes the city best in India The positives that have helped Hyderabad get best ranking among Indian cities have been cited as low crime rate. It said that in comparison to other Indian cities, Hyderabad is better on account of lower crime rate.
It also said that the police force in Hyderabad is efficient and reliable. Hyderabad’s schools also have a role to play. The report said that over time cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai have emerged as cities of choice even for the reason that they provide options for international and reputable English speaking schools. Less air pollution in these cities is also a reason. Infrastructure wise too Indian cities need to improve. Mumbai was ranked best, followed by Kolkata at 149 and Pune at 151, which showed that Hyderabad has still lot to improve.
