Is the Tteokbokki — a Korean snack — or ppogi — a Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda — featured in Squid Games is making you crave a quintessential Korean meal? Then fret not, Hyderabad is now home to its first Korean restaurant named Goguryeo.
Korean shows and singers have already found a place in the hearts of Hyderabadis and popularity of shows like Crash Landing On You, Hometown Cha Cha, and now Squid Games is testimony to this. One common thing among all is the artistic showcase of Korean foods.
From offering fiery appetizers like the Korean Fried Chicken to Soups like the Kimchi Chigae to Kimbaps (which looks similar to Sushis) to different meat-based rice bowls, the place can satisfy your Korean food cravings. The place was started by Choi Miyiung and her husband Ko Hongsun about two months back and since then lining up of customers has not stopped.
With different posters of famous K-pop singers like BTS and Blackpink adorning the walls of the restaurant and Korean music playing, one might forget that they are dining in Hyderabad. The place is packed with customers and as per the owner, they get an average of 200 people each day.
The Korean Fried Chicken is unlike our regular fried chicken and has a hint of sweetness and sourness to it. If
you are a pork lover then the restaurant offers a variety of options from pork rice bowl which is pan-fried spicy pork and homemade sauce with rice. It also offers different types of barbeques in chicken and pork and one can use the stove on their table to heat the meat.
Korean food cannot be complete without the Ramyeon aka Ramen and Goguryeo surely provide this comfort food in their authentic style. The spicy, broth-based soupy noodles are the perfect partner for the winter chills and the place has different Ramens – plain, cheese, egg, and chicken.
“I have learned the art of cooking from a Korean chef in Seoul and we shifted to Hyderabad about nine years ago as I wanted my children to learn English. My children are studying in the US and we wanted to use our cooking skills to provide Korean cuisine in Hyderabad,” Miyiung told Telangana Today.
They experimented with the food for seven months and Miyiung realized that the authentic Korean taste may not suit the taste buds of Indians. “So, I started adding more spice to the food and started getting positive reviews. After almost seven months, we started this place called Goguryeo – which means history,” she says.
So, next time you watch a Korean web series and want to eat what they are eating then head to Goguryeo.
