Several private laboratories in Hyderabad, which were permitted to conduct Covid-19 diagnostic tests, have temporarily halted the process of collecting samples from suspected patients.
The ICMR had permitted 18 private laboratories and 10 government-run laboratories to conduct Covid-19 diagnostic tests in Hyderabad. However, a combination of factors appears to have forced private laboratories to halt collection of samples.
Many of these laboratories have stopped Covid-19 diagnostics following overflow of swab samples resulting in a backlog that would take days to clear.
Right from day one, when private laboratories started accepting swab samples, there was heavy rush of people wanting to get tested for SARS-CoV-02. As a result, these
laboratories ended-up accepting samples that would take days to clear the backlog. At present, these laboratories have stopped taking new appointments and are urging people to enquire for appointments after July 10.
Apart from the heavy backlog, another reason cited by private laboratories is the need to take-up disinfection of the laboratories, as a few of their technicians had reportedly tested positive.
The move also comes in the wake of State government teams during their inspection, detecting major discrepancies in handling of Covid-19 tests. Such labs were given time to rectify the deficiencies before reapplying for recognition. As part of the measures to rectify the violations and improve their infrastructure deficiencies, a few private laboratories have temporarily halted Covid-19 diagnostics.
