The city has added another feather to its cap by climbing up the ladder in the Swachh Survekshan national survey that rates cities across India on cleanliness, and has won an award too.
The city, apart from winning the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’s award for the Best Self Sustainable Mega City in the country (category- 40 lakh population), also performed better in sanitation activities than other municipal corporations in metros including Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and climbed up 10 ranks. Competing with other cities with over 10 lakh population, the GHMC stepped up to the 13th rank in Swachh Survekshan 2021 compared to the 23rd rank last year. The national survey assessed the cities for 6,000 marks, with the GHMC securing 4,551 marks. The city’s score is better than the national average (2,072) and State’s average (2,242).
In the Swachh scorecard, out of the 6,000 marks, 2,400 weightage was given to Service
Level Progress (SLP), 1,800 was given to Citizen Voice and Certification carried 1,800 marks. GHMC performed the best in Citizen’s voice category securing 1,453.03 out of 1,800. In this category, Central government officials took the opinion of people residing the city through various methods. In the SLP, out of 2,400 marks, the city scored 1,797.96.
Under the the SLP category, the city is rated on door-to-door collection and transportation of solid waste, cleaning of public areas, benefits extended to all sanitary workers including informal waste pickers, sanitation in water bodies, ban on use, sale and storage of non-biodegradable plastic bags, recycling initiatives and other activities.
Under the Certification category, garbage free rating is given to cities and Hyderabad was rated three star. Water plus certification and ODF certification also carry weightage in this category. In certification, GHMC got 1,300 out of 1,800 marks.
