Temperatures in Hyderabad city and areas across Telangana may reach beyond 45 degrees Celsius, especially in May. Also, between March and May, the maximum temperature is expected to be above 40 degrees Celsius on most days. However, the forecast made in the Indian meteorological department’s (IMD) outlook for the season also stated that mercury levels across Telangana will likely be only 0.5 degrees to 1 degree Celsius above normal this summer.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Friday, YK Reddy, in-charge director, IMD, Hyderabad said that although Telangana falls under the core heatwave zone, mercury levels are expected to reach relatively lower grounds this year, especially compared to last summer. “Mercury levels are expected to be closer to monthly average.
Heatwave days are only expected during April-May,” said Reddy.
Heatwave is a period of abnormally high temperatures, far above the normal maximum temperature. According to IMD, there is only about 37% chance of maximum temperatures going above normal in the core heatwave zone from March to May. Last year, Telangana experienced seven heatwave days, all of which were recorded in May. As many as 12 deaths due to heatwave were recorded across the state in 2018.
“In the next two weeks, we can expect mercury levels to go beyond 40 degrees Celsius. Temperature may go beyond 45 degrees Celsius for 15-20 days, mostly at the end of May,” said Reddy, adding that temperature will be at its peak from 2pm to 3pm every day.
