India's first electric taxi service launched in Hyderabad

Hyderabad city has launched India’s first electric taxi service on Monday, as part of efforts to promote eco-friendly transport. The city Mayor B Rammohan flagged off five e-taxis at Necklace Road close to Hussain Sagar Lake. 

The service which is promoted by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been launched by Green Mile, an electric vehicle infrastructure start-up company working towards sustainable transportation. The GHMC is promoting these electric vehicles in the twin cities to check the growing air pollution. The taxis will operate from different parts of the city to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad

According to Green Mile director V Siddharth initially five e-taxis have been launched on a pilot basis. “Very soon we will operate a fleet of 25 e-taxis. We have two charging stations in the city and plan to open a total of 25 charging stations over the next one year,” he said. Green Mile will launch more e-taxis from strategic locations like shopping complexes and universities, among others depending on the response. E-taxis and charging stations would offer the perfect green alternative for a cleaner and greener Hyderabad, Siddhartha said. The company has tied up with GMR Group for establishing a charging station at the International Airport.
