IT and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday asked officials to ensure that the city is covered by not less than 10 lakh closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
He gave these instructions when officials, during a review meeting, brought to his notice the need to install more CCTVs in addition to the existing 5.8 lakh cameras. Rao asked officials to work closely with various government departments, public sector undertakings, residential welfare associations to install CCTV cameras wherever required.
Hyderabad is the first among other States and in the 16th place in the world in installing CCTV cameras for the safety of the public, he said quoting a report. “As the city is expanding and attracting more investments, there is a need to improve the vigil,” Rao said.
He advised the Police, and Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Departments to work jointly in installing CCTVs on the city suburbs where new colonies were coming up. Emphasising on the need for cameras at crowded places, the Minister said the same facility
should be provided at the newly constructed flyovers and roads.
He instructed the MA&UD Department to coordinate with the Police Department to ensure that all commercial complexes, gated communities, malls, IT Parks, parks, shelter homes, government hospitals, bus terminals, and markets installed CCTVs mandatorily. He reminded them that CM K Chandrashekhar Rao was giving top priority to the safety of citizens and was initiating several measures to enhance security in the State. Rama Rao also sought to know whether any rules pertaining to installation of CCTVs should be incorporated in the new GHMC and HMDA Acts that would be enacted soon.
He advised the GHMC on the steps to be taken for better traffic management after consulting the traffic police. In the wake of increasing cybercrimes during the lockdown, Rama Rao said the Police Department should prepare cyber warriors in addition to those investigating the cybercrimes. Home Minister Mohd. Mahmood Ali, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and DGP M Mahendar Reddy were also present at the meeting.
