Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister (MA&UD) KT Rama Rao has directed Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to study and submit a report on Metro Neo, a project introduced by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro), which is considered suitable for Tier-II cities.

A team of officers headed by MahaMetro Managing Director Brijesh Dixit met the Minister here on Monday and gave a detailed presentation on their ongoing projects.

MahaMetro officials said Metro Neo had dedicated and elevated corridors and was cost effective than the conventional Metro. Metro Neo could carry up to 350 to 400 passengers at a time and could run at a 2-minute frequency. Officials also mentioned about their resource mobilisation models and stated that Metro Neo could be easily modified as per the increasing population and traffic in future.

MahaMetro has undertaken Metro projects in



cities such as Nagpur, Pune, Greater Nashik, and, Thane, and works to provide a safe, efficient, affordable, and environmentally sustainable rapid public transport system.

During the meeting, Minister and the officials extensively discussed about Metro Neo, which is a combination of the metro and bus system.

The Minister has asked Hyderabad Metro officials to study the MahaMetro proposals, besides adapting and implementing different practices such as rainwater harvesting system, sewage treatment and roof-top solar panels on Metro coaches, etc. He also directed HMRL officials to imbibe suitable practices while preparing DPRs for the Elevated Bus Rapid Transit system (EBRTS) proposed in Western Hyderabad.

Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan, Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar and HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy attended the meeting, according to a press release.
