Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao on Thursday said cities and other urban areas will play a major role in the growth story of Telangana State in the future.

“As of now, 43 per cent of the State’s population live in the cities, but this is expected to go up to 50 per cent in future,” the Minister said, at a review meeting with chairpersons and senior officials of Urban Development Authorities (UDAs) in the State here.

Instructing the officials to prepare detailed master-plans for each UDA keeping future development and increasing population in mind, Rama Rao said the UDAs should also ensure that revenue is generated from available local sources to fund the various development activities being planned.

The Minister asked the officials to prepare a detailed report on the

land banks available within the UDA limits in the State. “The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has been implementing innovative schemes and the UDAs elsewhere in the State should replicate HMDA’s best practices,” he said, and urged the officials to include details pertaining to the green and industrial zones, water bodies and development of suburban areas in the master-plans.

Stating that the government had recently announced the Land Regularisation Scheme for all the new municipalities in the State, he asked the officials to take a tough stand on illegal layouts.

MA&UD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar, UDA chairpersons Marri Yadava Reddy (Warangal), GV Rama Krishna Rao (Karimnagar), Ravinder Reddy (Siddipet) and Prabhakar Reddy (Nizamabad) participated in the meeting.
