The Information Technology and Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Ramarao has said that the people were facing problems due to encroachment of tanks and nalas in the city.
Replying to questions raised by the MIM Members Akbaruddin Owaisi, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, Mohd Moazam Khan, Jaffer Hussain, Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, Kausar Moinuddin and BJP Members G Kishan Reddy, Dr K Laxman, Chintala Ramachandra Reddy, NVSS Prabhakar and Congress MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Nalas maintenance in Hyderabad, on Wednesday in the State Assembly, the Minister said that due to recent rains, most of the drains in the twin cities overflowed, leading to water logging and causing lot of inconvenience to the public. The existing storm water drainage system in the city and encroached nalas failed to drain out the rain water, he said.
Rama Rao said that GHMC has only 1221 kilometers of storm water drainage which was not sufficient, and this was causing water stagnation at various localities during rainy season. Apart from this, lakes and malas were encroached resulting in reduction their capacity.
The GHMC has taken up improvement of bottlenecks for 47 storm water drains at a cost of Rs.230 crore, he informed and explained that 13 chronic water stagnation points were identified and action was being taken to rectify the same. In GHMC 63 lakes were taken up for development and
beautification by the GHMC funds. About 20 lakes were proposed under comprehensive development of urban lakes in mission Kakatiya. Separate action is being taken for widening of nalas by removing encroachments, he said. The GHMC has identified 346 road vulnerable points which were prone to water stagnation. Estimates were being prepared to rectify the same at a cost of Rs.121.44 crores. By next monsoon, these points will be rectified, the Minister assured the House.
The Minister said that they have removed more than 75 lakh cubic meters silt this year as against 43.61 lakh cubic meters silt last year. He said that the government conducted internal survey on removing of silt in nalas– whether the removal work going perfectly or not. He said that cases were filed against the engineers, staff, who failed to perform their duties properly. Stating that the GHMC was behaving impartially, the Minister said that Airtek Machines were brought for the removal of silt in nalas. He said 28,000 constructions have to be removed if the government wanted to implement Kirloskar recommendations.
The government took 400 engineers and they will be assigned to work soon in GHMC. He said that they were taking steps to see that the rain water would not be stagnated in the routes of Metro rail. GHMC allocated Rs.1.55 crore for the development of Nacharam nala and the process of tenders was also over and the works will be launched very soon. He said that a meeting will be convened with the City MLAs very soon.
