The Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, ESL Narasimhan, on Tuesday appointed Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, senior legislator from MIM party, as protem speaker for the second Telangana Legislative Assembly which was scheduled to meet on January 17.

In an order issued by the State Legislative Secretary V Narasimha Charyulu, it was mentioned that under class 1 of Article 180 of the Indian constitution, the Governor has appointed Mumtaz Ahmed Khan to perform the duties of the speaker of the newly elected Telangana Legislative Assembly until a member of the said house is chosen to the



speaker.

Meanwhile Narasimha Charyulu met protem Speaker Ahmed Khan at his residence as a curtsy call and briefed him about his duties as protem speaker during the administering of oath of newly elected members of the State Assembly.

Ahmed Khan was elected to State Assembly six times from Charminar Assembly constituency and is a senior most member from the MIM party. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao earlier took a decision to appoint a protem speaker belonging to the friendly alliance partner MIM.
