Elections to 132 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State will be held on July 30, and the notification for the elections is likely to be released on July 15.
The Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) on Monday declared its preparedness to complete the entire process within two weeks, paving the way for the establishment of new governing bodies of ULBs. The Commission will release the final list of voters on July 14. The Telangana High Court had recently issued directions that elections to ULBs should be held within the next four months.
Further, the TSEC decided to conduct the polls to ULBs using ballot papers. The voters list is being prepared based on the existing list used during the Assembly elections and any newly registered voter will be accommodated in the supplementary list.
State Election Commissioner V Nagi Reddy said the Commission was ready to release notification on July 15. He said draft voters’ list was being prepared as per the recent
division of wards in 132 ULBs. About 60 lakh voters are estimated to be residing in 129 municipalities and three municipal corporations.
“The draft voters’ list will be published on July 10, while objections and suggestions will be received by the respective municipal commissioners on July 12 and final voters list will be published on July 14.
Reservations for all posts also will be finalised the same day,” Nagi Reddy told the representatives of political parties.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, TRS secretary Gattu Ramchander Rao said the TSEC was fully prepared for the polls on July 30. He welcomed the decision of TSEC to establish one polling station for every 800 voters, and the polling stations’ list is likely to be released on July 19. He said some political parties which criticised the State government for not holding municipal elections were now seeking more time for the polls from the TSEC.
