Director General of Police Anurag Sharma on Thursday suspended five police officers for their alleged association with slain gangster Mohammad Nayeemuddin.

The directive from the DGP also includes a departmental inquiry against four police officers and departmental action on 16 personnel. The orders came after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police Y Nagi Reddy submitted its report on the allegations raised against police personnel having connections with Nayeem and his gang, officials said.

The suspended officers are Additional Superintendent of Police (CID) M Srinivas Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mirchowk) M Srinivas Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) C Srinivas Rao, Inspector (Sangareddy) Masthan and Inspector (Kothagudem) Raja Gopal.

The four officers against whom departmental inquiry has been initiated are Deputy Superintendent of Police

(DSP) (Mahabubnagar) Sai Manohar, DSP (Illendula) Prakash Rao, DSP Venkata Narsaiah and Inspector (Gadwal) Venkataiah.

“The five suspended police officers were direct beneficiaries and were involved in the illegal activities of the gangster,” they added.Till February, the SIT had registered 197 cases against Nayeem’s gang as well. It also arrested 125 persons while 878 witnesses were examined and charge sheets in 18 cases were filed in courts. Fourteen members of the Nayeem gang, involved in different cases, were also detained under the Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act of Goondas 1986.
Nayeem was killed in an encounter by the Telangana police at Millennium Colony in Shadnagar, Mahbubnagar district, last August. He was accused of committing several murders and extortions among others. He was wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s ‘encounter’ case in Gujarat in 2005.
