New Zealand shooting: Anxious kin in Hyderabad await details

The restaurant owned by Mohammed Khursheed Jahangir from Amberpet, who suffered wounds in the shooting incident that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand, is famous for dishing out lip-smacking Hyderabadi cuisine.

Taking a cue from one of his family members who established a restaurant in Australia, Jahangir went to Christchurch 15 years ago and set up his own restaurant. In a short time after its launch, the eatery is said to have become popular for serving Hyderabadi dishes.

 

As and when he gets time, Jahangir would visit the city along with his wife and two children to meet his family members.

Jahangir’s brother Mohammed Khursheed said they came to know about the incident in the afternoon and since then they have been trying to contact Jahangir’s family.

As the news spread, scores of relatives and friends of Khursheed started thronging his residence at Rahatnagar in Amberpet to enquire about the incident. TRS MLA Kaleru Venkatesh and City Mayor Bonthu Rammohan visited Khursheed’s house and promised necessary support from the State government.

Meanwhile, the family of 31-year-old Ansan Farhaj, who



lives along with his wife, three-year-old daughter and six-month-old son at Christchurch, was worried as there has been no contact with him.

Farhaj went to New Zealand to do his masters at the University of Auckland in 2010 and since then has been living there with his family and has citizenship.

Mohammad Sayeeduddin, the 68-year-old father of Farhaj, said that his daughter-in-law called him and told about the attack. Since then, he has been making frantic calls to find out the whereabouts of his son.

“My daughter-in-law informed that everybody came back home after offering prayers. But Farhaj did not return. We are trying to get in touch with the authorities there,” he said.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Tarun Joshi said, “We have spoken to officials in New Zealand who said that one person from Hyderabad sustained wounds while another is missing.”

As of now, the families of Jahangir from Rahatnagar and Farhaj from Nadeem Colony in Tolichowki approached the police requesting help in getting information about their wards in New Zealand.
