A Non-Resident Indian, who came from Virginia in the US, allegedly abandoned his pregnant wife along with his six-month-old baby boy in the lurch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad early on Thursday and went with his mother to their home in Ramanthapur.
Y Keerthi Sai Reddy, a mechanical engineer working in Virginia, and his wife Sirisha, a BTech graduate, and their son Sahit had landed at the RGIA around 2.30 a.m. from Virginia via Dubai. Soon after coming out from the arrival terminal, Sai Reddy met his mother Vanitha who came to receive him, and both left the airport without informing Sirisha or their son.
Left with no other option, Sirisha along with the child and luggage approached the police outpost and met on duty Assistant Sub-Inspector Dhan Singh for help. She informed him that she had no money or a mobile phone to contact her parents who live in Vanasthalipuram.
Moved by her plight, the ASI arranged a cab and facilitated her to reach home safely. He also sent a police constable with her to ensure her safety and by 5 a.m., she reached her home.
“It seems to be a planned move as my
husband had given false information to me when I enquired with him about the exact time of reaching Hyderabad when we were in Dubai,” she said over phone. She said her husband and mother-in-law had started harassing her two months after their marriage in April 2015. After the delivery of the child, the duo suspected her fidelity and forced her to undergo a DNA test in US to ascertain the actual biological father.
Sirisha’s problems compounded after the delivery when Vanitha came to US.
“My mother-in-law used to impose restrictions on me on breastfeeding the child and never allowed me to be with my son. She never provided proper food to me,” she said.Unable to bear the torture of Sai Reddy, and Vanitha, Sirisha, informed the matter to her parents in January, who in turn lodged a complaint with the Vanasthalipuram police who issued an arrest warrant against them.
Child Rights Activist P. Achyuta Rao said stringent action should be taken against Vanitha for not allowing Sirisha to feed her baby.“We will approach the Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagawat and seek necessary action against her,” he said.
