Petrol and diesel are to get cheaper in Telangana thanks to TRS government's decision to pass on benefits of excise duty cut announced by the Centre on Tuesday to the consumer.
Though the Telangana government has not yet decided on the exact quantum of benefit to be passed on, preliminary estimates indicate it could result in at least a `2-3 per litre reduction. “Petroleum products are taxed based on the ex-refinery
price and excise duty collected by the Centre. If the Centre reduces duty , prices will come down in the state,“ Somesh Kumar, principal secretary , revenue department, Telangana, told.
Telangana had the distinction of collecting highest VAT on petrol at 35.2% and 27% on diesel in addition to 8% entry tax. But after introduction of GST, all taxes, including entry tax, have been subsumed in GST.
