Tue 25 Aug 2020, 11:52:28
The price of petrol has once again started to rise, and is inching towards Rs 85 a litre in the city.

On Monday, petrol was sold at Rs 84.83 a litre. In the last nine days, the prices went up by Rs 1.04 a litre, i.e., from Rs 83.79 a litre on August 16 to 84.83 a litre on August 24.

Petroleum dealers attributed the surge in petrol price to crude oil rates at the global level along with VAT and local taxes. This impacted petrol prices, which rose by Rs 10.86 a litre from Rs 73.97 a litre on June 7 to Rs 84.83 a litre on August 24, they said.

On the other hand, the price of diesel remained unchanged for the last three weeks. The

price, across metropolitan cities in the country, was the highest in Hyderabad at Rs 80.17 a litre.

According to dealers, the price of diesel varies in different metropolitan cities depending on local taxes. The price of diesel in Delhi is Rs 73.56, in Mumbai (Rs 80.11), in Kolkata (Rs 77.06), in Bengaluru (Rs 77.88) and in Chennai (Rs 78.86). The diesel price reached the current level after shooting up by Rs 12.22 per litre during the lockdown. If the price of diesel was Rs.67.82 a litre on June 7, it rose to Rs.80.17 on August 2. This is not the first time that diesel prices have crossed the Rs 80-mark. In 2018, it was sold at Rs 82 a litre.
