In Telangana, polling has just begun for three constituencies of the state Legislative Council amid tight security. They are the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies and the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency. The biennial election is being held as the sitting members are going to retire next month. The polling is being held in a preferential format from 8 AM to 4 PM.
A total of 56 candidates are in the fray for the lone Graduates’ constituency while 15 candidates are in the fray in the n Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar teachers’ constituency and 19 candidates are contesting in the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’
constituency.
Over 3 lakh 55 thousand graduate voters and 52 thousand 885 teachers will be utilising their franchise at a total of 973 polling stations in all three constituencies. Meanwhile, the election authorities are using 1200 ballot boxes including 600 jumbo boxes for the graduates’ constituency while 1138 ballot boxes are being used for the two teacher constituencies. The counting of votes will be taken up on the 3rd of next month.
While BJP is contesting all three seats, the ruling Congress has fielded candidates only for the Graduates’ constituency and extended support to union teachers and the BRS is staying away from the election.
