Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat on Wednesday warned traders and dealers against selling spurious and sub-standard seeds to farmers and cheating them.
Ten persons involved in illegal trading of spurious seeds including vegetables and cotton were detained under the Prevent Detention Act so far, with several others being arrested regularly across the commissionerate limits, he said.
“Most of them have no valid licence from the Agriculture Department
and also sell spurious seeds to farmers,” Bhagwat said, adding that the crackdown on such dealers would continue.
According to the police, traders were purchasing huge quantities of unauthorised spurious vegetable seeds from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan at low prices and selling it at higher prices here. The police have advised farmers not to purchase seeds without labelling in the market. Seeds sold in loose too should not be purchased.
