Hyderabad: The State government has accorded administrative sanction of Rs.6,014.78 crore for taking up the double-bedroom housing scheme in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. A total of 69,535 housing units are to be built in different parts of the city as per the project.

Of the amount sanctioned, the State government share is Rs.5,388.96 crore, while the rest of the amount of Rs.625.81 crore will have to be borne by the civic body.

Each double-bedroom house will be constructed at a cost of Rs.7 lakh. In case of cellar plus stilt and nine floor structure, the government has permitted the municipal corporation to increase the cost to Rs.7.90 lakh, depending on the site conditions and the differential amount, which has to be borne by the GHMC.

In all, the government has sanctioned the construction of one lakh double-bedroom houses in GHMC limits. Already, tenders have

been finalized for the construction of 16,562 houses at 51 different locations and works have been grounded at many places. Tenders for another 16,000 houses to be constructed at 21 locations are under process.

The municipal corporation has also sought sanction for construction of 9,896 double-bedroom houses under the third phase and the proposal was under the consideration of the government.

In an effort to expedite the construction works, the GHMC has already extended maximum exemptions, besides necessary support to the builders. Several locations in and around Hyderabad have been identified for construction of double-bedroom houses.

Recently, GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy approached South Central Railway General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav and sought vacant railway lands at Mettuguda, Addagutta slum, Chilkalguda railway station and other areas for construction of the houses.
