The second-longest flyover of the city spread over 2.71 km at Shaikpet will be inaugurated on Saturday by Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao.
The six-lane two-way Shaikpet flyover has been built under the State government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) with an estimated cost of Rs 333.55 crore. This flyover takes off at Tolichowki, near the erstwhile Galaxy Theatre and lands at Malkam Cheruvu while traversing through OU Colony, Shaikpet and Whisper Valley. This flyover will address traffic issues and reduce the commuting time for those using the Rethibowli- Gachibowli stretch and vice versa.
This road stretch is an intermediate ring road with heavy traffic, specially during peak hours with many commuters using this road to reach Gachibowli, Hitec City and Financial District. This flyover covers four major junctions- Seven Tombs, Film Nagar, OU Colony and Whisper Valley decongesting traffic at these places.
The facility will also ease traffic on the 11 km
stretch i.e. Lakdikapul- Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki- Gachibowli which is a major traffic corridor with 4 lakh Passenger Car Unit (PCU) per day, according to the GHMC. This 11 km stretch connects Rethibowli Inner Ring Road and Outer Ring Road near Gachibowli. Meanwhile, the flyover also connects a major corridor from Biodiversity to JNTU Junction resulting in hassle-free corridor of 17 km (Lakdikapul to JNTU junction), the GHMC said in a press release.
Shaikpet Flyover
In addition to constructing this infrastructure project to decongest traffic, the GHMC has come up with a smart environmental conservation measure clubbed with an initiative to promote fitness. A park equipped with a walking track has been built under the Shaikpet flyover. It has water cascade, vertical gardens on 16 pillars of the flyover, greenery and benches further decking up the lung space.
