Shamshabad airport gets green nod for expansion plans

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) got the green nod for its expansion plans of an estimated of `2,629 crore. The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the MoEF uploaded its minutes of meeting held in the last week of May.

“The EAC recommended the project for environmental clearance,” the minutes said. The RGIA has been handling 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and the expansion of the airport is proposed to handle 18 MPPA per year.

“RGIA is located within 5,495 acres of land of which about 2,000 acres has been developed towards airport needs which mainly constitutes of 1,700 acres of airside & 300 acres of landside facilities. No land acquisition is involved as all the expansion activities are



planned within the RGIA site area of 5,495 acres,” the EAC said.

The water requirement after expansion would be 12,617 Kilo Litres Per Day (KLD), out of which about 7,765 KLD is potable water, the need for which will be met from Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and 4,852 KLD is non-potable water which will be met by recycling of treated wastewater and other such measures.

The power requirement due to the proposed expansion at the airport complex would be 4,000 KWH, the requirement will be met from the existing power supply of Telangana Power Transmission Corporation Limited. A public hearing was conducted by the TS Pollution Control Board on February 28 over the same.
