A 40-year-old man, who assaulted Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy with a knife, was arrested by the Siddipet police on Wednesday.

Police commissioner N. Swetha Reddy said that the accused G. Raju, a resident of Hanuman Nagar, Chepyala village of Mirdoddi Mandal, and shifted to judicial remand.

The commissioner explained that, on October 30, Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, who is also the BRS candidate from Dubbak, was assaulted with a knife by Raju while he was campaigning at Surampalli village of Doulthabad mandal of Dubbak Assembly Constituency.  A case was registered by the Doulthabad police against him under the provisions of IPC for an attempt to murder and the Arms Act.

"It was revealed that Raju was working as a reporter and collected money from the people. He was also reporting on the political developments in the constituency and was enquiring about the tour programmes of Kotha Prabhakar Reddy. In order to gain attention and create a sensation, he had hatched a plan with an intention to kill Kotha Prabhakar Reddy during his campaigning

As per his plan, Raju had purchased a knife at a roadside vendor in Dubbaka. After inquiring about Prabhakar Reddy's election campaign on October 30, Raju reached there, parked his  bike at an isolated place, and mingled with the common public.

After completing the campaign in the village and visiting the house of Domala Anjaiah to express condolence on the death of his mother, he boarded the vehicle. In the meantime, the accused Raju stabbed Prabhakar Reddy in his stomach due to which he sustained severe injury in the right side of the stomach," Swetha Reddy said.

Raju also sustained injuries at the hands of the public and he was shifted to Gandhi Hospital, Hyderabad, for treatment. After recovery the accused was discharged Wednesday and was arrested by the police. The knife which was used in the offence has been recovered and the phone of the accused which fell down in the crowd has been recovered from the Domala Anjaiah have been recovered and produced in the court.
