The Telangana Rashtra Samithi government is all set to launch some new schemes on the fourth anniversary this year on marking the State Formation Day, including, ‘Telangana Kanti Velugu’ and ‘Advocates Insurance scheme.’

As per the original schedule, the path-breaking Rs 5 lakh insurance scheme for farmers was also to have been launched on June 2. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, who is particular about the successful implementation of any scheme, however, deferred it to August 15 to ensure that the flagship programme aimed at the well-being of the rural folks is free of any glitches.

The hallmark of the State government schemes, be it welfare or developmental, has been that they have all been successful, not merely remaining on paper after their launch as used to happen in the past. Aware of the fact that people in rural Telangana State had vision and eye-related problems, the State government decided to conduct an extensive eye test of all the citizens in the State, an unprecedented exercise in the country.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will officially launch the programme on State Formation Day. Under this programme, each and every individual will be tested and wherever necessary, they will be recommended for surgery free of cost. Those found with vision problems will be provided spectacles free of cost.

The Medical and Health Department has already taken up elaborate arrangements including procuring new kits and deploying medical staff for the successful conduct of ‘Kanti Velugu’ programme. This is the first-of-its-kind exercise in the country with no other State government taking up such a programme and at such magnitude.

Senior officials say that the programme is yet another example of the commitment of the State government to improve healthcare for the people, particularly the downtrodden, in the State. The department will be covering all the habitations in the State in a phased manner.

In yet another unique programme, the State government, keeping in mind the role played by the lawyers’ fraternity in the separate Statehood movement, has decided to bring them under the accidental and health insurance scheme besides providing funds for Bar Associations in the State. Bar Associations, based on their membership strength, will receive funds for their development. Law Minister S Indrakaran Reddy formally launched the scheme in Hyderabad on the eve of the State Formation Day.

According to estimates, around 40,000 families of advocates would benefit from the scheme. The government has decided to provide Rs 10 lakh accidental death insurance cover and another Rs 2 lakh as health insurance cover to advocates in the State. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has also allocated Rs 100 crore for the Advocates Welfare Trust to implement various welfare scheme for the community.

The State government is also planning to launch a Citizens’ Health Profile scheme, under which the government will compile a database of health details of every single individual in the State. The health department has been developing a special software for the programme which would also be launched soon. “We had planned to launch the scheme on State Formation Day, but a final decision in this regard has not been taken,” a senior official from the Health Department said.
