State government will extend financial assistance to every flood affected family: KTR

TRS working president and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday assured that the State government will extend financial assistance to every flood-affected family in and around Hyderabad.

In addition to the Rs 550 crore released earlier, Rama Rao said the State government was ready to spend another Rs 100 crore towards flood relief measures. “The Opposition parties are only interested in mudslinging at the ruling TRS rather than extending help to the needy which was proved yet again during the recent floods,” he said.

“Even before rains subsided, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao released Rs 550 crore for flood relief measures. If needed, we will request him to sanction another Rs 100 crore for the people of Hyderabad and provide financial assistance to all the flood-affected families,” he assured. He pointed out that the Chief Minister released Rs 550 crore as an immediate relief measure which was the highest by any State to take up relief measures in any major metro city.

Speaking to mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan on Sunday, Rama Rao said the State government provided financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to 4.3 lakh people who were affected by the heavy rains. He reiterated that the financial assistance was provided without considering the beneficiary’s political or social background.

Opposition parties staging dharnas alleging irregularities in disbursement of financial aid and stated that the GHMC has the list of beneficiaries who had received the financial assistance of Rs 10,000 along with their photographs, signatures and house addresses.

“It is sad to see some BJP leaders participating in protests even though they themselves have received the financial assistance,” the TRS working president said. He said that on learning about a few affected families not receiving the financial assistance, the authorities have started reaching out to them. He urged people not to worry as the State government was ready to reach out to all the flood victims

The TRS working president said Hyderabad received 1,200 mm rainfall this year which was highest in more than 100 years. “We have set up a Disaster Response Force with 800 members headed by an IPS officer to combat such flood situations. No other metro city in the country has a disaster response force,” he said.

Citing the Kirloskar Committee report, Rama Rao stated that during the Congress regime, about 28,000 encroachments were found on the nalas in Hyderabad. He assured that all the encroachments will be removed in a phased manner over the next a couple of years and will be ensured that no such flood-like situation recurrs in the State Capital in future.
