Streetlights: GHMC to commission energy audit

HYDERABAD: The maintenance and operation of over 4.40 lakh streetlights in the city has become a burden on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) which is incurring a huge expenditure due to the conventional lighting.

To reduce the expenditure, the corporation has decided to commission energy audit of the street lighting system in Greater Hyderabad by a consultant.

The civic body will go in for energy conservation and efficiency by replacing the conventional fittings with energy-efficient LEDs under ESCO model through Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a central government



undertaking.

According to GHMC officials, implementation of this project is expensive as it involves replacement of 4.41 lakh streetlights, and sees the need of a certified energy auditor for evaluating the present consumption.

The consulting agency, to whom the Phase-I work will be allotted, has to study with 10 percent of switching points in each category, wattage of lights, type of roads and area with existing conventional fittings.

In Phase-II, the consultant has to undertake a post-implementation study on 10 percent of fittings where the baseline study was conducted.
