Karimnagar: Yadagir Sunil Rao was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation here on Wednesday. Challa Swaroopa Rani, who was unanimously elected as a corporator from division 37, was elected as Deputy Mayor.
Sunil Rao, who was elected as a councillor for Karimnagar municipality in 2001, was elected as corporator for Karimnagar Corporation in 2005. He was again elected as corporator from division 33 in the recent civic polls. The authorities conducted Mayor election at 12.30 pm after completion of swearing in ceremony of newly elected corporators.
With the corporation having 60 corporators, a quorum of 32 members was required start election processes. Officials took up the process as 41 members attended the special meeting.
BC Welfare and Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar, MLA Rasamai Balkisan and MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao also participated in the meeting as ex-officio members.
While Kamsala Srinivas (3rd division corporator) proposed the name of Sunil Rao as Mayor which was seconded by Arsha Kiranmai from Division 23 and Jangili Ailnder Yadav (Division 21) proposed the name of Swaroopa
Rani for Deputy Mayor, Nandelli Madhu (18th division) seconded it. The officials declared the two as Mayor and Deputy Mayor unanimously as there were no nominations for the posts.
The BJP corporators did not participate in the election process and they left the meeting hall after taking oath.
Speaking to reporters after election, the Minister thanked the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and IT and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao for giving top priority for BC communities and women.
For the first time in the history of Karimnagar municipality, a woman has been appointed as deputy mayor. At the same time, a woman was also appointed as vice-chairman of the newly formed Kothapalli municipality, he said.
A lot of development took place in Karimnagar with the funds sanctioned by the Chief Minister, Kamalakar informed and said that the people, impressed by the developmental works, elected TRS candidates.
The Minister advised the newly elected body of the corporation to work honestly and enhance the reputation of the State government.
