As the Budget session begins in the Telangana assembly today, the opposition BJP and Congress have hit out against the ruling TRS for not scheduling the Governor’s address.
According to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party, the Governor's address was not required, as the budget session is a continuation of the previous session, which was not discontinued.
However, the governor’s office statement said that if the Assembly session occurs after five months, it will be considered as a new session. The Opposition BJP and Congress have strongly condemned the decision and alleged that the TRS government was showing a ‘disrespectful attitude’ towards the constitutional guardian of the state.
Congress leader, former minister and ex-leader of the opposition in Telangana legislative council, Md Ali Shabbir Tweeted, “TRS is
celebrating Women's Day at a grand scale. But @telanganacmo KCR has no respect for women. He discontinued decades' old Parliamentary custom of beginning Budget Session with the Governor's Address. The Reason: Telangana's Governor is a woman”
“As per the Constitution of India, State Governor is not just a figurehead but the head of the State Executive. Governor is a fundamental constituent of the elected government, along with Chief Minister and the state cabinet. Undermining the State Governor's role amounts to undermining and violating the letter and spirit of Indian constitution,” said BJP leader Krishna Sagar Rao.
He alleged that Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) was engaging in ‘petty politics’. On Sunday, the Telangana state Cabinet chaired by KCR approved the state budget for 2022-23.
